Trust for Working Landscape manages all the Public Farmland on Bainbridge Island. The have a five year contract with the city to manage these properties but due to budget cutbacks T.W.L.doesn't currently receive funding from the city. They are a non-profit organization funded by donations, grants, and efforts.
There are approximately 60 acres of public farmland on the island. The past several years have seen practical improvements, deer fencing, invasive species removal, irrigation, orchard revitalization, and installation of community gardens, implemented by T.W.L. The driving force behind the work of the T.W.L. board and volunteer groups is the mission of introducing the community to local food sources and increased understanding of local agricultures benefits.
This years T.W.L. Harvest Fair at Johnson Farm Sept. 27th will feature, cider pressing, sheep shearing, talks by local farmers on various topics, a beer garden , music , and fun entertaining events. I will be a good opportunity to come out and support local farms.
