March Real Estate News on Bainbridge Island

Posted on March 2, 2010
The Feb. real estate market continued on a positive trend. A snapshot of the market on Feb. 24th shows 167 Homes for sale with 40 under contract, 66 Condos available with 9 under contract and 61 vacant land parcels with 3 under contract. 2010 closed sales to date include 24 homes, 4 condos, and 4 land parcels. This is a 20% increase over the same period in 2009. Inventory remains at a two year low and the few new listings that have come on which were in exceptional condition and priced correctly went under contract quickly. Despite this activity prices are still depressed well below 2006 and 2007 highs. Most of us receiving our property tax statements this month saw that our assessments had finally decreased to reflect a more accurate market value.

History of Seabold Church on Bainbridge Island

Posted on March 2, 2010
Even before the idea of a Seabold Church was considered, a community Ladies' Aid was meeting, having been organized at the J.A. Silvens' Home in 1899.  It was largely through the concern of the ladies and pioneers of the Seabold Community that in 1908 a meeting was held in the schoolhouse to plan a church.  (The schoolhouse is the present Seabold Community Hall.)  Both Setterland's corner (across from Carlson's Store) and Lindvog's corner were considered for a church site, the latter being accepted. It took nearly two years of fund-raising and organizing to build the church. Though the date is uncertain, it was either late in 1909 or early in 1910 that the formal dedication of the new building took place. In November 1962, the congregation voted to accept architectural plans by Paul Kirk for a 4500 sq. ft. addition and the moving and remodeling of the sanctuary at the new church site adjoining the parsonage.  On February 21, 1963, they voted a $30,000 loan for the project and the next day began in earnest to clear the land.  On the morning of March 21, 1963, at 9:00 a.m., and in a heavy rain, power crews stood by to break and replace lines that stood in the path of the moving trucks which were ready with the building and the steeple on separate trucks.  The actual moving began at 10:00 a.m. and by noon the building stood in its rightful place.

Doc's Bainbridge Island History

Posted on January 31, 2010
Doc's Marina Grill is located in one of the last old historic working waterfront buildings on Bainbridge Island. It has been named many times... as a tavern, starting with the Yodeling Oyster to it's current incarnation as a restaurant known as Doc's Marina Grill. There are not many of the older generation Islanders still around, but those who are, fondly remember it as Mac's. The area was a sort of Bainbridge Island's Cannery Row.. One of the infamous events at Mac's was the beer fights. The Men's restroom boasts a giant working periscope offering a panoramic view of Eagle Harbor.
